Admiring the old architecture in Puerto Cort\u00e9s<\/strong>, you can\u2019t help but feel the exuberance of the banana plantation <\/strong>era that was once the heart of this area. The mountains <\/strong>and rivers surrounding <\/strong>the town <\/strong>make it a most scenic<\/strong> setting. Previously known as “El Pozo”<\/strong>, it was the home of the Bruncas <\/strong>and Diqu\u00eds <\/strong>who created the famous stone<\/strong> spheres<\/strong>. It was a small but important port in the area that brought materials and supplies to the town that would later be constructed by the Spanish, making it the institutional center for the Osa<\/strong>. The banana boom<\/strong> lasted from 1938 until 1984 when United Fruit<\/strong> left <\/strong>the area and with it the livelihood of some 20,000 residents.<\/strong> Banana plantations<\/strong> have since been replaced <\/strong>by palm plantations<\/strong> and some livestock farms<\/strong>. Despite the absence of the maintenance of the dam infrastructure that the banana company had built, the community <\/strong>has been resilient battling <\/strong>the floods <\/strong>that have battered the area<\/strong> over the years<\/strong>. Today, important institutions, such as schools <\/strong>and the hospital <\/strong>are still here although attempts <\/strong>have been made to move <\/strong>the town further north<\/strong> to higher ground<\/strong>. The Osa municipality <\/strong>was transferred to a new building<\/strong> in what is now known as Nuevo Cort\u00e9s.<\/strong> New communities have been built and some residents have made new homes there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flooding <\/strong>is still a problem <\/strong>in the central part <\/strong>of town <\/strong>and many residents want to protect <\/strong>the homes <\/strong>and the historical significance<\/strong> of the area<\/strong>. However, it needs better communication<\/strong> to keep <\/strong>the population safe<\/strong>. Terrestrial infrastructure cannot hold up to the fierce power of water.
