Golfito is a port town that experienced an era of prosperity when it was an active banana port in the 1930s. This rich history lasted some 30 or 40 years when the eventuality of soil depletion, blight, and labor problems forced the United Fruit Company to vacate its operation in 1985. This lead to the opening of the Golfito Duty-Free Zone in 1986 that still offers Costa Ricans and visitors a tax break on purchases and brings tourism to the area. Today it is a major employer of the district and urban area that has a population of approximately 8000. The “Deposito Libre” houses 50 duty-free stores selling large and small appliances, perfumes, cosmetics, electronics, liquor, and more. Many of the stores have websites allowing you to see their offerings so you don’t spend a lot of time locating the products you want. A few years ago the buying process used to take 24 hours before you could even begin to purchase. Now that process has been streamlined, giving shoppers more time to shop. The Duty-Free Zone operation and the surrounding hotels, restaurants, and businesses take full advantage of the Fastest and Most Reliable Internet in Costa Rica.

One might wonder how this could be possible in one of the most remote regions of the country. Itellum is making this a reality with the implementation of Costa Rica’s only High-Speed Satellite Internet. A port town, Golfito is a captivating setting with a natural harbor, lush vivid green mountainsides, secluded beaches, and estuaries teeming with wildlife. When United Fruit, Chiquita-Dole, and American Banana Company pulled out, the area was destined to experience bad times, but palm oil farms and exportation coupled with the free zone allowed the area to rebound. This gave rise to tourism primarily in the form of marinas, sport fishing, yachting, and boating supplies and services. In addition, it is a destination for smaller cruise ships and shore excursions that have developed into sought-after tourist attractions and comprehensive tour companies. Hotels cropped up close to the Duty-Free Zone for the shoppers’ convenience. Hotel Sierra, Cabinas Cristy, and Hotel San Martin are close by and provide accommodations for visitors. Several restaurants also provide comfortable venues to enjoy traditional dishes of the area and fresh seafood are excellent choices.

Since the area has become the destination for those that love to be away from the “beaten path”, the internet for hotels and medium-sized businesses is increasingly important. Tourists from North and South America and Europe gravitate to this area for the fishing and the environmental awareness of the hotels and lodges here. Casa Roland Marina & Resort, Golfito Marina Village & Resort, Hotel & Restaurant Mar y Luna, Fish Hook Marina & Lodge, Hotel Las Gaviotas, and Hotel El Gran Ceibo are just some of the establishments in the area. And there is a large selection of fishing charter and supply companies at your doorstep. Few areas in the world have a similar geographic configuration that has the incredible offshore/inshore saltwater species combination found here. Sailfish, Blue, Black and Striped Marlin, and more than a dozen Red Snapper species and many more.

Naturalists enjoy the diversity of wildlife in Piedras Blancas National Park, part of the Osa Conservation Area, and previously a part of the Corcovado National Park. It became a separate park in 1999 after it was extensively logged. Today more than 80% of the park is protected.

Although the port does not attract the type of cruise line traffic that the ports of Limon and Puntarenas do, it does attract the smaller more exclusive ships such as Windstar with limited frequency. In fact, the Windstar Cruise Line is one of the few cruise lines that pull into Golfito via the picturesque Golfo Dulce. Larger ships anchor out at sea and tender into the port facilities but seldom carry more than 600 passengers and 500 crew although increased popularity is attracting larger ships and in turn, more tourist dollars. Cruise passengers can opt to go on tours close by including snorkeling, hiking, zip-lining, rappelling waterfalls, or a visit to the quaint Playa Cacao for some excellent seafood in one of the old-style restaurants. Many cruise passengers like to just relax at one of the establishments on the shore and catch up on emails via High-Throughput Satellite Broadband internet.

The beaches close by, Playa Zancudo and Pavones are natural beaches with some of the longest surf breaks in the world. Playa Zancudo is a primarily flat black sand beach that spans 6 kilometers. Both areas are popular with backpackers and there are low-budget accommodations and hostels readily available, That doesn’t mean that places to stay are limited. On the contrary, there are many vacation rental homes, luxury vacation homes, boutique hotels, and private residences available for rent. Even though these areas are off the beaten track they still have great food, a few bars, restaurants, and discos that keep digitally connected with Reliable Satellite Internet and Broadband.

Across the Golfo Dulce is Puerto Jiménez, the largest town in the Osa Península with a population of just over 3000 inhabitants and its multi-colored wooden buildings. In the late 1960s, the remote seaside town was transformed into a thriving port by gold mining and logging. With the care of its townspeople, it has managed to retain its charming, small-town ambiance. While tourism has attracted a number of foreign residents to this little corner of the world, there is still enough of a Costa Rican population to maintain a unique local flavor. It has maintained a close relationship with nature due to its proximity to Golfo Dulce National Park and Corcovado National Park — areas coined by National Geographic as “one of the most biologically intense places on earth.” Collectively these two parks occupy about 250,000 acres of wildlife sanctuary and natural reserve that is shared with its human neighbors. Visitors and locals alike benefit from the Rural Satellite Internet that is not only Reliable Satellite Internet and Broadband, but the most Secure and Fast Satellite Services in the country. From Golfito to Puerto Jiménez and all points in between represent the dream location for those that want to be digital nomads far from the cities and amid a wild tropical wonderland.

The southern zone of Costa Rica holds a lot of intrigue for many people.
