bordered by Puntarenas, Cartago, and Limon provinces. Its name comes from a motion made in 1931 to recognize the efforts made in support of the area by Lic. Pedro P\u00e9rez Zeled\u00f3n. This area was the focal point of the 1948 revolution and saw the bloodiest moments of that war. Monuments in the town center remain to commemorate this historically important event. Getting to the area can be quite an adventure if you take the famous Cerro de Muerte (Hill of Death) route. Consistent with its origin, the road has claimed the lives of many people in the past. Today it retains its name but has been made much safer for road travel. If you are taking this route chances are you are headed to the capital of the canton, San Isidro de El General. The population of the canton is about 145,000 and is comprised of 12 districts, which based on geographical area, is divided equally between urban and rural populations.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With an economy originally based on agriculture starting with coffee and then moving into cattle, logging, sugar cane, and tobacco, the need to expand became evident when the international prices for these individual products began to fall. There are 263 species of amphibians and reptiles, and about 400 bird species. Chirripo National Park shelters the largest population of tapir in the country, in addition to puma, jaguar, peccary, monkeys, and many other species of mammals. The resplendent quetzal is also an attraction for bird watchers. There are several tour operators that do hiking and mountaineering tours, canopy tours, rafting, ATVs, rappelling, local garden tours, bird sanctuaries, hot springs, coffee tours, and waterfall excursions.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although the indigenous population is no longer a major part of the community, they have since moved south in the Talamanca Mountain Range and are known for their exceptional, colorful mask carvings that you may find both in the P\u00e9rez Zeled\u00f3n area and in the beach areas close by.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another plus about this region is its proximity to the coastal areas of Dominical, Uvita, Ballena, Ojochal, and many more going southward.
