The unusual thing about Flamingo is there are no flamingos there. The town was named by George Howarth, a Canadian investor who discovered and bought 250 acres in the area in the 1960s. Rumour has it that he thought the roseate spoonbill was a flamingo that doesn\u2019t exist in Costa Rica. Howarth was a controversial character in the area and after trying to enforce an elite enclave subject to his rules, he sold the huge tract of land for $1.1 million. The land changed hands a few times and in 1983 a marina was built by Ray Osborne who died in 1993. James McKee purchased the marina and ran it from 1989 until 2003 when the government canceled the concession. It became a base for the Coast Guard for several years, after which they built their own facility adjacent to the marina. However, now a new group is breathing life into the marina and it should be fully operational by 2022.<\/span><\/p>

The marina project, \u201cMarina Flamingo\u201d is a great draw to the area with 184 slips and a village, VIP Club, restaurants, and shops all complimented by <\/span>Fiber Optic Internet Connectivity<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Fastest & Most Reliable Internet<\/span><\/strong> in Costa Rica engineered by iTellum. As you leave Margaritaville, the road is bordered on the left with mangroves. The beauty of this area is that the mangroves are protected by law, and therefore no construction is allowed. Geographically the surrounding area is dotted with lagoons and small uninhabited islands that make for excellent scuba diving. Dive centers in town have scuba diving offerings to the Santa Catalina Islands, only five miles offshore, where whale and hammerhead sharks, manta rays, whalesharks, turtles, and other big fish can be seen. A long-time venue for sport fishing tournaments, Flamingo traditionally hosts the Costa Rican Amateur Fisherman\u2019s Club\u2019s annual international Sailfish tournament. A returning competition is the Presidential Flamingo Fishing Rodeo to be held in August.<\/span><\/p>

Although water plays a big part in the activities here, there are two golf courses Located within 30-40 minutes of Flamingo. Tee-off times can be booked easily online through <\/span>Secure and Fast Satellite Services<\/span><\/strong>. Gara de Leon Golf Course is a most picturesque course with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean bordered by native forests. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II., holes 14 and 15 are right on the ocean and the 15th hole is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Central America. Another course close by and also designed by Robert Trent Jones II is the Reserva Conchal Golf Club is a \u201cCertified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary\u201d through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. It is one of 3 courses in Costa Rica and 905 courses in the world to hold the honor.<\/span><\/p>

The area is only about an hours drive (27 miles) from the city of Liberia, the international airport, hospitals, \u201cbig box\u201d stores, and shopping malls.
